Weigh both sides, then say which one outweighs the other
An advantages-and-disadvantages essay — sometimes called an "outweigh" essay — asks you to do something none of the other essay types do: actually compare two sides against each other and reach a verdict on which one is heavier. Your opinion is the whole point, right from the introduction.
The real question
"Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether. Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience."
Some people have chosen to fly less often, or to give up flying altogether, in order to reduce their environmental impact. In my opinion, the environmental benefits of this trend clearly outweigh the disadvantages it creates for individuals and businesses.
It is true that flying less carries real costs. Businesses rely on air travel to meet international clients face to face, close deals in person, and reach new markets quickly, something video calls cannot fully replace. Many tourism-dependent economies, particularly small island nations, depend heavily on visitors arriving by plane, and a sharp fall in tourist numbers could damage local businesses that have few other sources of income. Air travel also supports a wide range of jobs, from airport staff to hotel and restaurant workers, so a significant reduction in flying would inevitably affect livelihoods, particularly in regions with few other transport links available to them.
However, the environmental case is stronger still. Aviation is widely recognised as one of the most carbon-intensive ways to travel, and unlike cars or trains, there is currently no realistic low-carbon alternative for long-distance journeys, meaning each flight taken now will keep contributing to climate change for decades to come. France's 2023 law banning domestic flights on routes where a reasonable train alternative already exists shows that emissions can be cut without losing connectivity altogether, since longer journeys and connecting flights remain unaffected by the ban. Other European countries have since discussed similar measures, suggesting that this kind of policy could become far more common in the years ahead.
In conclusion, although reducing flights creates genuine economic difficulties for individuals and businesses, the long-term, irreversible nature of climate damage means the environmental benefits carry more weight overall, especially when practical alternatives like rail investment can soften the economic impact considerably.
